Alex Majoli

Alex Majoli was born in Ravenna in 1971. He attended the city's Istituto d'Arte and, at fifteen, joined Daniele Casadio's Studio F45.

He joined Magnum Photos in 1996 and became a full member in 2001. He has worked for Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Granta and National Geographic, documenting conflicts around the world.

His first book, Leros, grew out of his work on the closure of the psychiatric hospital on the Greek island. With Paolo Pellegrin, he co-authored Congo (Aperture, 2015). In Scene (MACK, 2019), he explores the theatricality of everyday life, straddling the line between document and fiction.

In 2012 he won first prize in the General News category of the World Press Photo with Mubarak Steps Down. He received the ICP Infinity Award for photojournalism in 2003 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016. His work is held in the collections of the International Center of Photography, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and MUFOCO.
