Simona Ghizzoni

Simona Ghizzoni (1977) is a photographer and visual activist for women's rights.

Her body of work revolves around two major threads, which often intersect: the social dimension of womanhood and the private dimension of self-portraiture.

While her images are often socially inspired, Ghizzoni tends to employ a personal and participatory narrative, at times fantastical, born from the intimate relationship she builds with her subjects.

In her series of self-portraits, the recurring element is a visceral relationship with the environment, alternating between autobiography and staged photography.

A two-time World Press Photo winner for her work on the female condition, her work has been widely presented in solo and group exhibitions, including the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Paris Photo, PhotoEspaña, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, Athens Photo Festival, Ex-Mattatoio in Rome, Fotografia Europea, Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, as well as being featured in several private and public collections, such as the Collezione Donata Pizzi and the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica.

In 2022 she served as jury president for Europe at World Press Photo.

Ghizzoni is a TEDx speaker and regularly gives lectures and classes at various European schools and universities. Co-founder of MAPS Images, in Italy she is represented by MLB Gallery.
