Cristina Vatielli

Cristina Vatielli was born in Rome in 1983. After graduating from the Scuola Romana di Fotografia, from 2004 to 2010 she worked as an assistant to Paolo Pellegrin (Magnum Photos) and specialized in post-production, also collaborating with other photographers.

Since 2006 she has been developing Exilio de dentro with French writer Manon Moreau, on the historical memory of the Spanish Civil War. Her work has been published in L'Espresso, Marie Claire, Io Donna, Newsweek, and Le Monde.

In 2008 meeting Arno Rafael Minkkinen led her to self-portraiture. In 2016 she created Le donne di Picasso, costumed self-portraits dedicated to eight women who loved Pablo Picasso, awarded second place in the Staged category of the Sony World Photography Awards 2016. The project marked the beginning of her collaboration with costume designer Lisangela Sabbatella, with whom she created Sin Hombre (2019), the story of two women who married in A Coruña in 1901. With Sin Hombre she received the Emerging Photographer Fund 2021 from Burn Magazine.

Since 2021 she has been working with her partner, videomaker Ippolito Simion, on Terra Mater, on the relationship between human fertility and that of the earth, exhibited at Spazio SUPERNOVA in Rome in April 2024. Between 2024 and 2025 she created, together with Teresa Saponangelo, a project on Elvira Notari, the first Italian film director. She has exhibited with Galleria del Cembalo in Rome, and in 2023 Sky Arte dedicated an episode of the series Le Fotografe to her.
