THE LIMIT OF THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ACT

5 Days Workshop in Rome

4 – 8 December 2026

Sequenza - Via delle Rose 43A - Rome · In English

The workshop

Over five days in Rome, this workshop immerses you in a practical, intensive process to build a personal photographic essay.

This is not a technical course or a theoretical seminar: you will work side by side with Antoine d'Agata in a total immersion format.

On the first day, you will begin with an individual portfolio review and a personal interview to define the theme or story you will develop throughout the workshop.

From there, you will go out into an intense photographic process, with the goal of building a visual diary that expresses your intimate perception of the world. Each day combines group critique sessions and individual mentoring where Antoine will review your work in progress, help you question your own position and perspective, and guide you to find the most coherent form for your project. The dynamic is demanding: you are expected to shoot daily and to write.

On the fifth day, you will dedicate the morning to the final editing and sequencing of your images, and the workshop will culminate in a public screening open to all audiences, where you will present the work, you have built over these five days.

Limited to 14 participants, to ensure personalized attention and an intense working environment.

The programme

Day by day

  1. 01

    Day 1

    Where you stand

    • Portfolio review, one by one. Individual interview with Antoine to define the theme you will work on for the week. Not a brief: a starting point taken from your own material. First shooting session in the afternoon and evening.
  2. 02

    Day 2

    Producing

    • Group critique of the first images. Shooting through the day. Writing in parallel: notes, fragments, whatever the work requires. Individual mentoring in the evening.
  3. 03

    Day 3

    Breaking it open

    • The day the project usually stops working. Group critique on what is not holding together. Individual mentoring to correct the direction, or to abandon it. Shooting continues.
  4. 04

    Day 4

    Narrowing

    • Last full day of production. The work is reviewed as a whole rather than image by image. First selection. What is missing has to be shot tonight.
  5. 05

    Day 5

    Closing

    • Morning: final editing and sequencing with Antoine. Afternoon: preparing the screening. Evening: public screening, open to all. You present the work in front of an audience.

Who teaches

The instructor

Antoine d'Agata

Antoine d'Agata was born on 19 November 1961 in Marseille. At the age of 17, he interrupted his studies to live in the world of the night. For twelve years, he lived and travelled in some twenty countries. In 1991, while living in New York, and with no photographic experience, he enrolled at the International Center of Photography where he studied with Nan Goldin and Larry Clark. In 1993, he moved to France, worked as a bricklayer and stopped his photographic practice until 1997. In 1998 his first book, Mala Noche, was published. The following year, he joined the Vu à peine gallery created by Christian Caujolle. In 2001, he received the Niépce prize. In September 2003, the exhibition 1001 Nuits was inaugurated in Paris, accompanied by the publication of two books, Vortex and Insomnia. In 2004, he joined the Magnum agency, published his fifth book, Stigma, and made his first short film, El Cielo del muerto. In 2006, the photographer shot his second film, Aka Ana, in Tokyo, and his latest four-hour feature, White Noise, brings together the voices of 24 women. Antoine d'Agata won the Photographic Book Prize at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles in 2013 for the book Anticorps, published the same year in a major exhibition at Le Bal, Paris.

Antoine d'Agata's work can be read as an exploration of contemporary violence from two distinct perspectives: the violence of the day, or economic and political violence (migration, refugees, poverty and war), and the violence of the night, or violence generated by social groups marginalised by poverty (survival through crime, narcotic addiction, sexual excess). His latest books (out of print) are VIRUS (2020), published by Studio Vortex, which documents the Covid-19 pandemic, and Antoine d'Agata – Francis Bacon (2020), published by The Eye, which brings together the works of both artists. MÉTHODE (2024–2025) at the Centre Pompidou was a residency of 147 days, an installation that structured his entire archive and recapitulated his entire artistic production, retracing the history of humanity. In 2025 he published the trilogy MÉTHODE, a visual and political testimony mixing a dialogue of archival images and unpublished production that describes the contemporary world.

For the past thirty years, Antoine d'Agata has lived and photographed all over the world. To date, he has published some fifty works. Author, photographer and filmmaker, he is a member of the Magnum Photos agency, and his work is represented by Magnum Gallery, MEM Gallery in Tokyo and Patricia Conde in Mexico. Internationally renowned, his work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, has been shown in various museums and has been included in public and private collections throughout the world.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a specific level to attend?+

You need an active practice. Not a specific level, but a body of work you can show and a way of photographing that is already yours, even if unresolved. This is not a course for beginners.

Is this a technical workshop?+

No. Nobody will look at your settings. The work is on what you photograph, why, and from what position.

What do I have to bring?+

A portfolio for the first day and a camera you already know how to use and a laptop

What language is the workshop in?+

The workshop is in English

Do I need to have a project in mind before I arrive?+

It helps, but it is not required. The first day includes a one-to-one interview to define what you will work on. Some people arrive with a clear theme; others find it in that conversation.

Will Antoine look at my work personally?+

Yes, individually and in group critique, every day. That is what limits the workshop to fourteen people.

Do I need to work on the same subjects as Antoine?+

No. His themes are his. The workshop is about your position toward your own subject, whatever it is.
